Learning Objectives:
- The interactive process is challenged where an employee’s “disability” is related to mental health, which is generally unseen and can result in behaviors that would otherwise be viewed as poor work performance. Even the most experienced HR executives and managers can be baffled by how to respond where an employee’s poor performance is a manifestation of mental health disorders.
- Understand how to respond when you are sitting in a disciplinary meeting and an employee produces a physician’s note requesting accommodations.
- Identify “the line” between reasonable accommodations and excuses for poor performance.
